The purpose of the IUD

The purpose of the IUD

The IUD is actually what we often call the intrauterine device. It comes in many shapes and is generally used for contraception. However, there are many types of IUDs and they are made of many materials, so that they can meet the needs of women with different body shapes. However, you must go to a regular and professional hospital to place an IUD. Never go to some small clinics, otherwise it will affect women's health.

What is the purpose of the IUD?

The scientific name of the contraceptive ring is intrauterine device. It is placed in the uterine cavity of women of childbearing age. It achieves the purpose of contraception through mechanical stimulation and interference of chemical substances. It does not inhibit ovulation and does not affect the female endocrine system, thus avoiding the adverse reactions of general drug contraceptives. After years of practical improvement, most of the IUDs currently used in clinical practice are copper-containing or drug-containing IUDs. The stent materials are plastic, polyethylene, memory alloy, etc., and the shapes are not single, including round, T-shaped, V-shaped, Y-shaped and chain-shaped. IUDs made of different materials and shapes have their own characteristics, and can therefore be suitable for women with different physiques and needs.

When is the best time to wear an IUD?

1. Place when menstruation has not yet ended. It should be placed on the 3rd to 5th day of menstruation. There are three advantages during this period: first, the cervix is loose and easy to insert. Secondly, since menstruation has just arrived, pregnancy can be ruled out and the ring will not be mistakenly placed in a pregnant uterus. Third, it avoids the concerns and inconveniences caused to women by the small amount of bleeding after the insertion of the IUD.

2. Insert after menstruation is over. It is best to have the IUD inserted 3-7 days after the menstruation ends and when there is no sexual history, because at this time the endometrium is just beginning to grow and the endometrium is thin, so bleeding can be avoided during insertion. At the same time, not having sexual intercourse after menstruation also avoids the possibility that the fertilized egg has grown on the endometrium when the IUD is inserted. Generally, most women choose to have the ring inserted at this time.

3. Insert the IUD immediately after delivery. At this time, the insertion operation is simple and easy, and contraceptive measures can be implemented in time, but it must be inserted after examination and approval by an obstetrician.

4. Place 42 days after delivery. That is, it should be placed during a health check around 42 days after delivery. The advantages of placing it at this time are: first, the cervix is loose. Second, the uterus has returned to its normal size and has not shrunk due to breastfeeding for too long. Third, timely implementation of contraceptive measures can avoid the occurrence of "hidden pregnancy".

5. The IUD can be inserted more than three months after delivery. However, it should be noted that if this time is the breastfeeding period, although there is no menstruation, there is still a possibility of pregnancy, which is what people usually call "hidden pregnancy". Therefore, women who have not had menstruation after delivery should first ask a doctor to check whether they are pregnant. The IUD can only be inserted after it is confirmed that they are not pregnant.

6. Insert the IUD immediately after artificial abortion or forceps curettage. The advantage is that contraceptive measures can be implemented at the same time during one operation, reducing pain.

7. Insert the IUD after normal menstruation resumes after spontaneous abortion or artificial abortion curettage.

8. If the caesarean section has been performed or the operation has been performed for more than six months and the condition is normal, you can also consider inserting an IUD.

9. If the previously placed ring has expired and requires a replacement, a new ring can be inserted at the same time as the ring is removed. You can also insert a new ring after your next menstrual period is over. But you must remember to use contraception during the month after removing the IUD.
