How did homosexuality come about? So far, although many scholars have studied it, no clear conclusion that is accepted by the public has been reached. In the book "Mamor on Sexual Perversion", it is written: "Homosexuality is determined by multiple factors such as psychodynamic, socio-cultural, biological, and situational factors", which shows that the reasons for homosexuality are diverse.
1. Psychodynamic Explanation Many psychologists have suggested that the causes of homosexuality are no different from those of heterosexuality. Both are lifestyles that people can adopt. The only difference is the gender of the partner chosen. However, many psychoanalysts disagree with this view. They believe that homosexuality is a neuropsychological disorder, which is the result of what Freud called the "Oedipus complex" that has not been overcome during adolescence. He wants to possess his mother, but ends up developing a "fear of castration," which creates a psychological barrier in interacting with the opposite sex. Another explanation emphasizes the role of the father in homosexual behavior. The family that produces male homosexuality is caused by having an overly strong and domineering mother and a timid, weak and passive father, which makes it difficult for boys to identify with masculinity. 2. Biological explanation Some have suggested that homosexual behavior may have biological roots. Observations on animals and humans Discovery: Homosexual behavior occurs in most mammals, especially males. Occasionally, a male dog, bull, or gorilla is even observed engaging in a single homosexual act. At the same time, observations also show that the incidence of homosexuality in identical twins is higher than in fraternal twins. Since androgens and estrogens exist in both male and female bodies, homosexual behavior may be caused by some imbalance in hormone secretion during the fetal period or adolescence. Due to the important role of hormones in human sexual development, the primitive gonads that initially develop in the embryo have a tendency to develop in both directions, which depends on the androgen level in the fetus. Testosterone prompts the primitive gonads to develop in the direction of masculinization and promotes the growth and development of male reproductive organs. The lack of testosterone causes the primitive gonads to develop towards femininity, growing female internal and external genitalia. Once the male or female sexual characteristics are determined, the other sexual organ gradually degenerates and only remains as a remnant. Could this be a biological cause of homosexuality? This is just a hypothesis and lacks solid evidence. 3. Explanation of learning theory According to the learning theory of psychology, most human behaviors are not instinctive, but abilities acquired through learning. Therefore, the learning theory disagrees with the psychoanalytic theory's view that people are born with both homosexual and heterosexual tendencies, and that later sexual orientation is the result of the suppression of one of the two. Learning theory holds that humans are not born with homosexual or heterosexual tendencies, but only with the ability to produce sexual responses. In infancy, all people are "neutral". Due to the influence of culture and the "reinforcement" of social structure, most people learn to respond sexually to stimuli of the opposite sex and have heterosexual tendencies. The emergence of homosexuality is essentially no different from heterosexuality and is also the result of learning. It is just that the personal experience of homosexuals leads them to another "learning" path leading to homosexuality. The so-called "learning" process mainly refers to the process in which, after a behavior occurs, the surrounding environment rewards or punishes the behavior, causing the actor to experience psychological affirmation or repression. Learning theory holds that in the initial stage, people come into contact with both the same and opposite sexes. If homosexual behavior is "rewarded", it may lead to the reinforcement of this behavior, making the person's sexual orientation tend towards homosexuality; if heterosexual attempts are frustrated, it will also weaken the formation of heterosexual orientation and make homosexuality more likely to occur. |
