Because the clitoris responds primarily to self-stimulation, many early psychologists, including Sigmund Freud, believed that orgasms from clitoral stimulation occurred primarily in adolescents or sexually immature people, while orgasms from vaginal stimulation occurred in "mature adults." A practice of self-mutilation of the clitoris known as "clitoral piercing" is taking place in the United States. Women who have had this mutilation done claim that it increases pleasure in this area. Many people wear a clitoral restraint ring (CBR) to pierce the clitoris, which can make self-stimulation easier and more frequent. According to Paul Joannides, only one in three women has a clitoris large enough for piercing, and the procedure has two potential dangers. Firstly, this piercing may cause infection, and secondly, it may cause scarring, and a scar in the clitoral area may cause lifelong pain.
