Bleeding after intercourse may be a normal physiological phenomenon, or it may be due to inflammation of the reproductive system. There are two normal physiological phenomena, namely premature sexual intercourse after menstruation and ovulation bleeding. Pathological causes include vaginitis, endometriosis, cervicitis, cervical cancer or external reproductive tract damage. Here are some reasons why bleeding after sexual intercourse may occur!

1. Bleeding during intercourse after menstruation is over

Some female friends have sex right after their menstruation ends and experience vaginal bleeding. You may think your period is completely over, but in fact you are having sex too early. Sexual stimulation causes the uterus to contract, and the blood remaining in the uterine cavity is discharged from the vagina, which manifests as bleeding after intercourse.

2. Ovulation bleeding

A small number of women experience bleeding during ovulation. Calculation of ovulation period: Under regular menstruation conditions, it is about 14 to 16 days before the next menstrual period. Ovulation bleeding may be related to the fluctuation of hormone levels before and after ovulation. The temporary drop in estrogen levels causes the endometrium to lose hormonal support and partial shedding of the endometrium, causing regular vaginal bleeding.

3. Vaginitis

Common vaginitis includes candidal vaginitis, Trichomonas vaginitis, and senile vaginitis. Vaginitis is usually accompanied by vulvar itching, increased leucorrhea, vaginal mucosal edema, congestion or ulceration, etc. During intercourse at this time, the vagina may be stimulated and bloody secretions may flow out.

4. Endometriosis

Some endometriosis grows on the cervix and appears as blue-purple nodules. If this blue-purple ectopic nodule is touched during sexual intercourse, it will cause bleeding. The bleeding is usually small in amount and dark red in color, and abdominal pain often occurs after intercourse.

5. Cervical inflammation

The more common chronic cervicitis in women of childbearing age include cervical erosion and cervical polyps. Mild cervical erosion will not cause bleeding after sexual intercourse; however, patients with moderate or even severe cervical erosion have increased vaginal discharge, white or yellow purulent mucus, blood streaks or a small amount of blood, and frequent lower abdominal or sacral pain. Bleeding during sexual intercourse is the most typical symptom. Cervical polyps often protrude outside the cervical opening. They may be single or multiple, have a brittle texture, and bleed easily when touched. The bleeding is usually bright red.

6. Cervical cancer

Postcoital bleeding is the earliest symptom. There are many small blood vessels and fragile tissues in the cancerous lesions, so after each sexual intercourse, the capillaries will rupture due to damage and bleed. If the cancer grows further, it will bleed more easily. Most cervical cancer patients do not have any discomfort symptoms in the early stages, and bleeding after sexual intercourse may be the only symptom. Cervical cancer is a common cause of post-coital bleeding.

7. External genital tract injury

(1) Virgin injury: The most common is the rupture of the hymen during first intercourse;

(2) Vaginal laceration: It often occurs during involuntary sexual intercourse or extremely rough sexual intercourse. If the sexual intercourse posture or position is improper, it can also cause vaginal bleeding;

(3) Poor vaginal wound healing after vaginal plastic surgery, hymen repair, vaginal tumor removal surgery and hysterectomy.

8. Other reasons

Taking emergency contraceptive pills, submucous uterine fibroids, dislocation of the IUD after it is placed in the uterus, having sex during menstruation, after an induced abortion, and too early in the postpartum period can easily cause infection and are also causes of bleeding after sexual intercourse. In addition, pregnant women should pay special attention to bleeding and seek diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.
