The difference between IVF and artificial insemination

The difference between IVF and artificial insemination

Both in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination use medical technology to achieve the purpose of conception. In fact, these methods are usually adopted when one of the couple has problems, but they can indeed help couples solve the troubles of infertility. So, do you know the differences between in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination? Let me introduce it in detail below.

There are certain differences between in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination. Although both nominally use medical technology to achieve the purpose of pregnancy, their scope of application is also different. Therefore, we should have a comprehensive understanding of this issue so that we can clearly understand the difference between in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination.

In vitro fertilization (IVF), commonly known as "test-tube baby", is currently the most widely used reproductive assisted technology in the world. "Test-tube babies" are not babies that actually grow in test tubes. Instead, several eggs are taken out of the ovaries and combined with the man's sperm in the laboratory to form embryos. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus to implant in the mother's uterus and result in pregnancy. Normal conception requires that the sperm and egg meet in the fallopian tube, combine to form a fertilized egg , and then the fertilized egg returns to the uterine cavity to continue the pregnancy. Therefore, "test-tube baby" can be simply understood as the fact that the test tubes in the laboratory replace the function of the fallopian tubes.

Although IVF was originally used to treat infertility caused by blocked fallopian tubes, it has now been found to be helpful for infertility caused by endometriosis, sperm abnormalities (abnormal number or abnormal shape), and even unexplained infertility. Studies have shown that the pregnancy rate after one cycle of treatment is around 40%, and the birth rate is slightly lower.

Artificial insemination often refers to the artificial injection of selected high-quality sperm into the female's body to complete fertilization.

The above is an introduction to artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization. I hope that these introductions can answer your doubts. In daily life, we often prefer to confuse the two. In fact, they are indeed different. Therefore, I hope that everyone can treat them in a more scientific way.
